Understanding the Person

This section helps you connect with the person you are working with and to start to figure out whether he or she has a dual diagnosis.

Introduction

Even when you know someone well, it can be hard to tell whether specific behaviours are indications of a mental health problem or a developmental disability. This is even more difficult when you have only known the person for a short time, or when you don't see him or her very often.

This section starts with tips to help you develop a relationship with the person. Then we give you two lists of questions:

The first is a set of questions to help you explore whether the person might have a developmental disability.

The second is a set of questions to help you explore whether the person might have a mental health problem.

This section ends by discussing substance use problems and how they can affect a person's ability to get and keep housing.
