Ashley Studentships for Research in Tobacco Control

Application schedule and materials for the fall 2008 competition of the Ashley Studentships for Research in Tobacco Control are now available.

OTRU is pleased to announce the fall 2008 competition of the Ashley Studentships for Research in Tobacco Control. The purpose of the studentship program is to increase the tobacco research capacity in Ontario by developing a future cadre of tobacco researchers and practitioners. Five studentships of up to $7,200 each will be awarded in this competition..

Protection from Secondhand Smoke: Monitoring Update

Each year OTRU produces a series of Monitoring Reports to examine the progress of the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, these reports document changes in the provincial tobacco control climate, including policies, programs, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour.

The first update of the OTRU Monitoring and Evaluation Series The Tobacco Control Environment: Ontario and Beyond provides a summary of legislation on secondhand smoke in Canada by federal, provincial and territorial jurisdictions, highlighting changes from 2007 to 2008.

Tobacco Control for the 21st Century: Challenges in Research and Evaluation

The Ontario Tobacco Research Unit is hosting a conference centred on research, monitoring and evaluation, and knowledge exchange to be held November 10-12, 2008. This conference will provide a forum for development of a national research agenda, and provide opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas among the research community, policy makers and practitioners in tobacco control communities across Canada.

New Special Report: An Experimental Investigation of Tobacco Smoke Pollution in Cars

This study demonstrates that TSP in cars can reach unhealthy levels under the most realistic ventilation conditions. Smoking just one cigarette in a car can lead to levels of tobacco smoke pollution that match and exceed by several times the levels found in the smokiest bars and restaurants.
