Evaluation News: What Key Informants Say About Cessation Services For Young Men

The Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU) is currently examining how well Ontario’s smoking cessation services are serving the needs of young male smokers aged 19-29.

Preliminary findings are presented in a series of newsletters. The first newsletter (Smoking and Quitting Behaviours of Young Men) in this series focused on the reach of existing services. The latest newsletter summarizes preliminary information provided through key informant interviews.

Tobacco and Public Health: From Theory to Practice Online Course Receives Award

OTRU's online continuing education course "Tobacco and Public Health: From Theory to Practice" has received the University of Toronto Fred Fallis Award for innovation and excellence in the design and delivery of online learning for health professionals. Effects of Funding Cuts to Tobacco Control Programs

Long-term comprehensive tobacco control programs are successful in preventing smoking acquisition and helping smokers quit, but there must be ongoing funding for sustained programming to maintain effects. OTRU’s December Update looks at the effects of funding cuts to tobacco control programs.

Youth Access to Tobacco Products: Monitoring Update

Comprehensive tobacco control includes age-related restrictions on access to tobacco products. This update summarizes the various youth access provisions in place in at the federal and provincial levels across Canada.

Each year OTRU produces a series of Monitoring Reports to examine the progress of the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, these reports document changes in the provincial tobacco control climate, including policies, programs, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour.

Tobacco Control for the 21st Century Conference a Success

The Ontario Tobacco Research Unit was pleased to host Tobacco Control for the 21st Century, an exciting and dynamic conference on research, monitoring and evaluation, and knowledge exchange in Toronto, in November. According to Dr. Roberta Ferrence, OTRU’s Executive Director and Conference Chair, feedback about the recent conference has been very positive. The meeting provided a forum for development of a research and evaluation agenda, and gave opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas among the research community, policy makers and practitioners in tobacco control communities across Canada.

Key note speakers for the daily Plenary Sessions included a number of international experts in tobacco control. Participants in Concurrent Working Sessions will continue to work together to produce a variety of products to inform the Canadian research and evaluation agenda for comprehensive tobacco control.
