HSRCU Resident Research Rotation
Past Participants
This rotation focuses on developing and implementing a research project that examines some aspect of the delivery of mental health services,
or related questions of policy. The research could focus on any patient population within the mental health care system,
or on mental health services in primary care, or on the incidence and prevalence of mental illness at the general population level.
Examples of research areas include mental health in the workforce, prescribing practices and their impact on health outcome,
the coordination of primary and specialty mental health care, or the effectiveness of health services targeted at populations
with either serious mental illness, or with concurrent mental and substance disorders.
Particular emphasis is placed upon methodology training and rigorous study design.
Methods used include cost-effectiveness studies, program evaluation research, clinical epidemiology or epidemiology, or qualitative methods.
Prior research methodology training is not required, but interested residents are encouraged to discuss potential research projects
with supervisors well in advance of starting the rotation. In addition to individual supervision with PhD-level research scientists,
the rotation offers access to the Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit's multi-disciplinary staff and research seminars,
as well as guidance and preparation for potential Fellowships in related areas.
