Past Fellowship Participants

Amy Cheung [2002-2004]

  

Amy Cheung recently completed her postgraduate training in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She received both her MD and MSc in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. Dr. Cheung's previous research experiences include studies in the areas of adolescent depression and community-based service delivery models for patients with persistent and severe mental illness.


Ongoing Projects

  • During her fellowship, she will examine barriers to the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of adolescent depression. Her research will include the development and dissemination of guidelines for the treatment of depression in this population. Dr. Cheung will also spend part of her fellowship at Columbia University, NYC to work in collaboration with the Center for the Advancement of Children's Mental Health.

Cristina Redko [2001-2003]

  

Cristina Redko is an anthropologist and clinical epidemiologist concentrating in mental health research and teaching. She received her M.Sc. from McMaster University and her doctoral degree from McGill University. For her Ph.D dissertation, she investigated extensively the everyday experiences of first episode of psychosis patients in Brazil. Previous experience includes research with the chronically mentally ill, evaluation of treatments for alcoholism and drug addiction, life experiences of cancer patients, and violence in work environments. She also has an interest in working with mixed methodologies (qualitative and quantitative), in addition to applying alternative anthropological methodologies in health services research.


Ongoing Projects

  • During her Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit, she aims to develop a research program with a more applied perspective focusing on policy oriented research. Her fellowship is sponsored by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation.


Saulo Castel [2001-2003]

  

Saulo Castel is a psychiatrist who was trained in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He got his PhD at the University of Sao Paulo through a research in addictions and has been also practicing general psychiatry for the last 15 years, in Brazil. Dr. Castel was awarded a Rx/D post-doctoral fellowship by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).


Ongoing Projects

  • His post-doctoral project at the CAMH is "The assessment of the role of concurrent substance use and mental health disorders in the utilization of substance abuse treatment and community services and associated outcomes. An analysis of intake assessment and six month follow-up of CAMH substance use disorders treatment service data."
