Educating Students about Drug Use and Mental Health - Grade 9: Expectation 4

Identify the school and community resources involved in education, prevention and treatment with respect to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Teaching/Learning Strategy 9:

Invite a local community health representative (e.g., school nurse, public health official, school counsellor, police officer) to speak to students about community resources and support systems available.

During the presentation, students will complete a chart that summarizes available school and community resources related to the heading of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Local School Resources:

Resources and services related to the prevention or treatment of substance use and abuse may differ from school to school. Some possibilities may include: Guidance Department, School Social or Youth Worker, Addictions Counsellor, School Nurse, Psychologist, Principal and/or Vice Principal. Check with the Guidance Department for resources available in your school.

Local Community Resources:

Local communities offer resources and services related to the prevention or treatment of substance use and abuse. Check with your local: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Community Information Centres, Public Health Department/Unit, Police Station/Fire Department/Hospital, Treatment Agencies/Clinics, Community & Youth Centres, LCBO
