Educating Students about Drug Use and Mental Health - Grade 6: Overview

Step 1: Identify the learning expectations:

1. Overall Expectation:

  • Identify the influences (e.g., the media, peers, family) affecting the use of cannabis and other drugs, as well as their effects and legalities of, as well as healthy alternatives to, cannabis and other drugs.

2. Specific Learning Expectations:

  • Describe the short and long-term effects of cannabis and other drugs.
  • Determine influences (e.g., interpersonal, personal, legal, economic) on the use and abuse of tobacco and other drugs (e.g., alcohol, cannabis, LSD) and consider them as part of a decision-making process to make healthy choices.
  • Identify people and community agencies that support making healthy choices regarding substance use and abuse.

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • show understanding of the effects of cannabis use in the short and long-term and communicate this information.
  • understand the decision-making model regarding drug use and apply it using the appropriate terminology, taking into consideration the influences (interpersonal, personal, legal, economic) which have an impact on those decisions.
  • investigate community resources and identify those which support healthy choices regarding substance use and abuse.

Step 3: Evidence of student learning will be identified and assessed by the student's ability to use and demonstrate these factors.

Step 4: Develop/determine the assessment strategy/tool:

1. What will students do to demonstrate their learning?

  • Discuss and brainstorm ideas about cannabis and other drugs
  • Discuss addiction
  • Identify factors that influence decision-making
  • Actively participate in collage-development
  • Take part in small group work
  • Work outside classroom
