Educating Students about Drug Use and Mental Health - Grade 4: Overview
Step 1: Identify the learning expectations:
1. Overall Expectation:
-
Identify the influences (e.g., the media, peers, family members) that affect the use of tobacco, as well as the effects, legalities
of and healthy alternatives to, tobacco use.
2. Specific Learning Expectations:
-
Identify the major harmful substances found in tobacco and explain the term "addiction".
-
Describe the short and long-term effects of first and second-hand smoke, and identify the advantages of being smoke-free.
-
Apply decision-making and assertiveness skills to make and maintain healthy choices about tobacco use, and to recognize factors
that can influence decisions to smoke or not to smoke (e.g., the media, family members, friends, law).

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

show they understand by listing five major harmful substances and why they are harmful.

be able to discuss and talk about addiction and begin to understand the patterns of use (abstinence, experimental, social
use, addiction).

actively participate in discussions about tobacco using appropriate terminology.

be able to express the advantages of being smoke-free and identify healthy alternatives.

be able to list/discuss/understand the physiological effects of first and second-hand smoke.

identify and demonstrate a range of refusal skills.

apply a process of decision-making.

apply critical thinking skills to influences (e.g., media, friends, family members, laws).
Step 3: Evidence of student learning will be identified and assessed by the student's ability to:
-
identify and discuss the harmful substances in tobacco and to define addiction.

identify healthy alternatives to smoking.
-
complete a matching exercise.
-
describe short and long-term effects with word-find and activity sheets.
-
complete a series of activities related to the influences of media, friends, family and the law.
Step 4: Develop/determine the assessment strategy/tool:
