Educating Students about Mental Health - Grade 2: Overview
Step 1: Identify the learning expectations:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- show they understand the difference between most prescription and non-prescription medicines and their effects on the body
and communicates this knowledge clearly and precisely, usually using appropriate terminology.
- show they understand and communicate safe use practices and use correct terminology clearly and precisely.
- use terminology correctly, and actively participate in a decision-making model to identify healthy alternatives.
Step 3: Evidence of student learning will be identified and assessed by the student's ability to:
- show differences between prescription and non-prescription medicines (including cough syrup) and effects on the body.
- describe a process for obtaining prescription as opposed to over-the-counter medication (e.g., visit the doctor, go to a pharmacy).
- sort prescription from non-prescription medicines.
- give personal examples of using prescribed/over-the-counter medicines.
- list rules for safer use of prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
- review concept of a trusted adult.
- describe healthy alternatives to medicine use.
- draw pictures and look at scenarios related to identifying the concepts of safe use of medicine and alternatives.
