Opioid Dependence Treatment Core Course, Nova Scotia

Description

This course prepares physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors to provide a comprehensive range of services for people with opioid dependence, including:

  • assessment for opioid dependence
  • methadone or buprenorphine maintenance treatments when appropriate
  • counselling
  • case management
  • referral to withdrawal management services if appropriate.

This course consists of five online modules and a one-day workshop.

 

Learning objectives:

After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • explain the pharmacology of opiates and how they affect the brain
  • define what is opioid dependence based on the DSM-IV criteria
  • differentiate abstinence based treatment and withdrawal management from methadone and buprenorphine maintenance treatment
  • decide on the appropriate treatment modality for the opioid-dependent client
  • implement safe prescribing, dosing, and dispensing of methadone and buprenorphine
  • explain the rationale for including urine drug testing in an opioid maintenance treatment program
  • describe the role of counselling and case management in methadone and buprenorphine maintenance treatment
  • demonstrate interprofessional collaboration

 

The instructions for methadone prescribing are based on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, 2012:Methadone Maintenance Treatment Handbook


The instructions for methadone dispensing are based on the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists, 2011:Methadone Maintenance Treatment Services: Standard of Practice for Community Pharmacists in Nova Scotia

Accreditation: 

The course meets the accreditation criteria for:

  • The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada  - 6.5 Section 1 credits
    As an accredited provider, Dalhousie University, CME, designates this continuing medical education activity for up to 6.50 credit hours as an accredited group learning Section 1 activity as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and reciprocally for AMA Category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition Award.


Course Fee: $450.00 for physicians and $350.00 for other health and allied professionals.
