Description
This course prepares physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors to provide a comprehensive range of services for people with opioid dependence, including:
- assessment for opioid dependence
- methadone or buprenorphine maintenance treatments when appropriate
- counselling
- case management
- referral to withdrawal management services if appropriate.
This course consists of five online modules and a one-day workshop.
Learning objectives:
After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to:
- explain the pharmacology of opiates and how they affect the brain
- define what is opioid dependence based on the DSM-IV criteria
- differentiate abstinence based treatment and withdrawal management from methadone and buprenorphine maintenance treatment
- decide on the appropriate treatment modality for the opioid-dependent client
- implement safe prescribing, dosing, and dispensing of methadone and buprenorphine
- explain the rationale for including urine drug testing in an opioid maintenance treatment program
- describe the role of counselling and case management in methadone and buprenorphine maintenance treatment
- demonstrate interprofessional collaboration

The course meets the accreditation criteria for:
- The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada - 6.5 Section 1 credits
As an accredited provider, Dalhousie University, CME, designates this continuing medical education activity for up to 6.50
credit hours as an accredited group learning Section 1 activity as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and reciprocally for AMA Category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition
Award.
Course Fee: $450.00 for physicians and $350.00 for other health and allied professionals.
