Motivational Interviewing 1: Introduction Course

This course is held under the auspices of the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Ontario.

 

Course description

This course is ideally suited for health care providers who are dedicated to enhancing their client-centered counseling skills. Participants will engage in skill-building exercises designed to enhance competence in using client-centered approaches and strategies when working with clients in various clinical settings. This learning experience can significantly influence how health care providers collaborate with clients, and affect behavior change across a range of health-related issues.

This course incorporates a collaborative clinical education model  – mentoring/coaching of motivational interviewing as a means of promoting learning as well as providing evidence of that learning. 

 

Target audience

This course is appropriate for all health care providers with direct client care responsibilities, and  who provide consultations about behavior changes across a range of health-related issues.

 

Accreditation

This course meets the accreditation criteria for,

  • The College of Family Physicians of Canada  –  10 Mainpro-M1 credits
  • The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada - Section 1 credit – 10 Section 1 credits
  • The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) – 21 core (specific) CEU’s

 

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • describe the basic concepts of motivational interviewing, including its spirit and essential strategies
  • articulate how a clinician's values, attitudes and assumptions influence the consultation process
  • use empathic counselling skills (described by the OARS acronym)
  • discuss how an MI-based approach may be integrated in clinical practice.

 

The course structure

The course is presented as a blended learning experience with modules 1-4  as self-directed modules,  module 5 is presented as an interactive webinar and module 6 a  MI feedback/coaching session via teleconference.

Course Faculty

The course will be led by members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). This is an international collective of trainers in motivational interviewing and related methods. The members of our faculty come from diverse disciplines in health care. Their central interest is in improving the quality and effectiveness of counseling and consultations given to clients about behavior change.

Opportunity for continuous learning & practice of MI

Structured post-training coaching/feedback of motivational interviewing (MI) skills is offered (for a separate fee): ongoing coaching/feedback of MI is encouraged to support MI fidelity and MI consistent behaviours in clinical practice.  These coaching opportunities will be based on completion of a 20 - 30 minute sample interview/consultation session with a standardized client using motivational interviewing.
This is also a prerequisite activity for our motivational interviewing intermediate level courses.
