Course Description
This course introduces a brief form of motivational interviewing that was developed for use in brief consultations by physicians,
nurses and pharmacists in primary care settings.
The course integrates its themes and concepts across clinical disciplines by providing opportunities to design brief interventions
pertinent to your clinical practice. This course guides you through a sequence of learning activities that will influence
your consultations with clients about behavior changes across a range of health-related issues.
Target audience: This course is appropriate for all health care providers who provide consultations about behavior changes across a range
of health-related issues.
This course is part of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program. The course meets the accreditation criteria for:
- The College of Family Physicians of Canada - 9.0 Mainpro-M1 credits (Webinar: 1.5 MI credits)
- The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada - 9.0 Section 1 credits (Webinar: 1.5 credits)

Introduction to Motivational interviewing in primary care settings
A two-hour interactive webinar provides an overview of the concept's philosophy, spirit and skills and strategies, which can
significantly influence your collaboration with clients/patients.
Please note: Module 1 is a pre-requisite for Module 2
Module 2 (classroom): (8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
Motivational interviewing for brief interventions in primary care settings
Through the use of mock clinical scenarios you will gain practice reflective techniques and other strategies that will increase
your ability to explore your clients' feelings of ambivalence, and to reduce their resistance to change. This learning experience
offers immediate feedback that can increase your clinical skill in the practice of motivational interviewing.
Module 3 (teleconference): (6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.)
Post-course feedback and coaching on practice performance (1 hour teleconference)
Participants share their experiences with integrating motivational interviewing skills into their clinical practices, while
course facilitators provide feedback and supportive coaching.
Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this training, you will be able to:
- describe the basic concepts of motivational interviewing, its spirit and essential strategies
- apply the strategies of motivational interviewing to explore and resolve clients' feelings of ambivalence or resistance to
change
- identify common therapeutic pitfalls in the consultation process
- understand the nuances of using motivational interviewing techniques in primary care settings
- develop a practice engagement plan based on motivational interviewing.
