Opioid Dependence Treatment Core Course

Note: This course has replaced our Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) course, and is the foundation of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program.

Description

This course teaches physicians, nurses, pharmacists and counsellors/case managers skills and guidelines for effective and safe management of clients receiving methadone or buprenorphine maintenance treatment for opioid dependence. The course is designed to promote interprofessional collaboration among the health care team involved in opioid dependence treatment. 
The course consists of five online modules, which are open for three weeks, and a one-day workshop.

January 25 - February 13, 2010 - FULL
February 13 - March, 2010 - FULL

  • Online tutorials are open for three weeks beginning on May 21, 2010 followed by a one-day workshop on Sunday, June 13, 2010.

Learning objectives:

After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • outline the fundamental concepts of opioid dependence
  • describe treatment approaches and modalities for opioid dependence
  • outline the fundamental concepts of abstinence based treatment, withdrawal management and methadone maintenance treatment
  • implement safe prescribing, dosing and dispensing of methadone and buprenorphine
  • explain the rationale for office-based urine drug testing
  • outline special issues and trends in methadone and buprenorphine
  • describe the role of counselling and case management in methadone and buprenorphine maintenance treatment
  • demonstrate interprofessional collaboration.

The course meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for 18 Mainpro- M1 credits.

The Ontario College of Pharmacists' has assigned 11 CEUs to the core program.

The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation has approved 20 CEUs to the core program.

Fee: $450.00 for physicians (includes examination fee) and $350.00 for other health and allied professionals.  All fees include course package and lunch.
