Concurrent Disorders Core Course

The Concurrent Disorders Core Course is the foundation of the Concurrent Disorders Certificate Program. This online learning experience is designed to help participants gain skills and knowledge to better identify, assess and provide treatment to people with concurrent disorders. This thirteen-week course consists of twelve modules. The timeline is one module per week, with a one-week break at the halfway point. The course includes various instructional activities, such as case scenarios, interactive review questions, individual activities and group discussion.

  • This course is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
  • The course sponsor is Wayne Skinner, MSW, RSW; Deputy Clinical Director, Addictions Program, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH); Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto; Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto.
  • Speakers and planning committee members will be requested to disclose to the audience any real or apparent conflict(s) of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of this program.

 

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • identify the relationship between concurrent mental health and substance use problems
  • describe the impact of concurrent disorders on clients, families, health care practitioners and society
  • identify common attitudes, beliefs and values clinicians may hold about concurrent disorders
  • summarize different strategies for combating the stigma associated with having a concurrent disorder
  • explain the benefits of providing an integrated treatment approach for concurrent disorders
  • identify the components and special considerations for comprehensive screening and assessment of concurrent disorders
  • outline the best practices for the treatment and support of clients with concurrent disorders

 

Prerequisites

While there are no specific prerequisites for this program, participants are strongly encouraged to have some background in either mental health or addictions. Some possible preparatory courses and tutorials include:
