Concurrent Disorders in Primary Care Online Course

This course is held under the auspices of the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, The Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

 

Course session begins: May 28 - June 22, 2012

 

Description

This online course introduces the fundamental concepts of concurrent disorders, with a focus on best practices and research in the field.  It is designed to provide physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors/case managers with the necessary information, skills and tools required to identify, screen and support clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health problems. The course consists of six self-directed online modules, which are open for five weeks. The course is a part of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program.

Target audience: Physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors/case managers.

 

Accreditation:This course has been approved for:

  • The College of Family Physicians of Canada - 15.0 Mainpro-M1 credits;
  • The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada - 15.0 Section 1 credits

 

 After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • define what is concurrent disorders
  • discuss the prevalence of concurrent disorders
  • explain how psychoactive drugs and prescribed medications interact with mental health disorders 
  • implement screening and assessment for both substance use and mental health disorders to identify concurrent disorders
  • appreciate the challenges and benefits of integrating mental health and addiction treatment at the service and system levels
  • discuss the effects of values, beliefs and stigma on the delivery of care
  • identify best practices for treatment and support for clients with concurrent disorders
