Advanced Issues in Opioid Dependence Treatment

Description

This interactive workshop provides physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors with the knowledge and skills to manage special issues related to people receiving opioid agonist treatment.  These issues include:

  • pregnancy
  • multi-drug use

The workshop is a part of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program.

Prerequisite: methadone exemption / MMT training

Accreditation:

This course is held under the auspices of The Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and  CAMH.

The specific credits will be announced closer to the event, we are expecting this program to be accredited for: 

The College of Family Physicians of  Canada - 4.0 Mainpro-M1 credits (per workshop);


The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada - 4.0 Section 1 credits (per workshop);

 

Learning objectives:

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Purposefully screen opioid dependent patients for concurrent alcohol and benzodiazepine use disorders
  • Identify specific complications for patients treated with methadone/buprenorphine resulting from the use and abuse of alcohol and benzodiazepines
  • Assess the effects of the use of tobacco, cocaine and cannabis on the course of treatment of patients treated with methadone/buprenorphine
  • Formulate a treatment plan to address multi-substance abuse by patients treated with methadone/buprenorphine
  • List interventions to prevent pregnancy in women who are treated with methadone/buprenorphine
  • Identify the indications to treat pregnant women with opioid agonist treatment
  • Suggest approaches to treatment in rural/remote areas with reduced access to certain treatments
  • Describe best-practice & protocol of methadone initiation for pregnant women who are opioid dependent, including induction and maintenance
  • Determine methadone does adjustments often necessary during pregnancy and during the post-partum period
  • Indicate what care is needed for methadone-exposed infant
  • Describe the current practice for treating pregnant women who are opioid dependent with buprenorphine.
