Training Program in Tobacco Use in Special Populations

Curriculum Components

The training program curriculum will encompass a variety of learning opportunities, from single sessions and presentations, to 1-2 day workshops, to short courses, to more intensive courses.  It will also involve practica in research laboratories, clinical settings, communities and or policy-making organizations such as Health Canada and NGOs.  Components of the training program include:

Core Courses
Tobacco and Health: from Cells to Society (full semester) This course, developed and co-directed by Dr. Ferrence et al and OTRU shall be a required course for all research trainees. This will provide a solid knowledge base in Tobacco Control. Since, students from Cameron et al will also be in attendance, it allows for networking with students and mentors from other disciplines. Students will also be encouraged to take the Multidisciplinary Aspects of Addictions course

Short Courses
There may be intensive 1-2 day experiences or spread out in 4-6 sessions over a few weeks in a modular format. Topics would include:

  • Literature reviews
  • Budgeting
  • Research methodology
  • Peer-review
  • Ethical issues in research
  • Grantsmanship
  • Writing and publishing research articles
  • Critical appraisal
  • Outcome measures in smoking cessation
  • Software training
  • Developing and managing a research team
  • Project management
  • Evaluation methods - efficacy, cost effectiveness
  • Communication skills

Annual Meeting
This will be held in conjunction with Cameron et al to allow for maximal interaction between mentors and trainees between the 2 programs.

Workshops
These may be panel discussions, formal presentations, single classroom sessions, or computer-based instruction by invited leading researchers. Relevant topics include knowledge translation, preparing a presentation (effective slides, presentation style, etc), conducting workshops, problem based learning, Aboriginal culture and smoking, Genetics of tobacco addiction, pharmacogenetics

Journal Club and Transdisciplinary Tobacco rounds
Bi-monthly meetings, with presentations on current issues, research, journal articles, etc will be held. Drs Selby and Ferrence have already instituted monthly transdisciplinary tobacco rounds open to researchers and practitioners in tobacco control in the Greater Toronto Area.  To date this initiative has been supported by internal funding from CAMH and OTRU.   This provides an opportunity for researchers and community practitioners to present their work to each other. This opportunity to network has also created a nidus for interdisciplinary collaborations to develop

Practica
Practical experience in animal and or human laboratories, research ethic boards, clinical programs, communities and agencies, especially as it relates to the treatment of the high risk groups targeted in the program
