Goals and Objectives of the Strategic Training Program in Tobacco Use in Special Populations
Goal: To develop capacity for transdisciplinary tobacco research in special populations in Canada.
Trainees will be equipped within the biomedical and tobacco cessation field with a broad transdisciplinary knowledge base,
a rich repertoire of research skills, strong connections to a vigorous research community in special populations as well as
tobacco control, and an ability to translate research to practice. This innovative approach will lead to a dynamic training
program that promises to train the new generation of transdisciplinary tobacco researchers.
Vision
This training program will create the capacity for Canada to be an international leader in:
-
research on tobacco use in special populations, especially concurrently addicted and mentally ill smokers
-
training biomedical and tobacco cessation researchers in transdisciplinary research
-
innovative approaches to researching the etiology and treatment of nicotine dependence in different populations
Primary Training Objectives
Develop long term capacity: To equip fellows within the biomedical and tobacco cessation field with a broad transdisciplinary knowledge base, a rich
repertoire of research skills, strong connections to a vigorous research community in special populations as well as tobacco
control, and the ability to translate research to practice
Meet the immediate need: To attract established investigators, currently working with special program; this strategy will build both research and
mentoring capacity
Make research training responsive to practice: To design training mechanisms that serve as vehicles for an iterative approach to research by
(a) supporting translation of research to practice, and
(b) training students to link practice with research
Increase interdisciplinary research across four pillars of CIHR: To stimulate novel research approaches by using training to generate new collaborations that bring together diverse research
groups that cross disciplines and CIHR pillars
Secondary Training Objectives
-
To attract trainees from other fields to acquire research training in tobacco use in special populations, and equip them to
contribute to transdisciplinary research collaborations and the training
-
To foster the development of a network of researchers that will instill and lead collaborative research efforts initially
within the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo
-
To encourage comprehensive and novel smoking cessation interventions targeted to these special populations and evaluated using
a range of methodologies
-
To improve the skills and self-efficacy of practitioners to treat smokers and train their colleagues in interventions where
appropriate.
