This interactive workshop provides physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors with the knowledge and skills needed for
the appropriate use of buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid dependence.
The workshop includes didactic presentations, case studies and group discussion.
Prerequisite: Methadone Exemption / MMT training
Learning objectives
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe pharmacokinetic properties of buprenorphine
- Explain advantages and disadvantages of buprenorphine treatment
- Identify good candidates for buprenorphine treatment
- Describe the clinical use of buprenorphine including maintenance and withdrawal management
- Explain safe prescribing, dosing and dispensing of buprenorphine
- Outline switching from methadone to buprenorphine or vice-versa
- Discuss issues related to special populations
- Summarize the role of counselling and case management in buprenorphine maintenance treatment
- Discuss the importance of interprofessional collaboration
This workshop meets the CPSO training recommendations for prescribing buprenorphine.
This workshop meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for 3
Mainpro-1 credits.
The Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) has assigned 3 CEUs to the workshop.
The workshop is approved for CACCF CEC hours.
