Working with Youth with Mental Health and Substance Use Problems

This two-day skills-based workshop explores the theories that underlie responses to concurrent mental health and substance
use disorders in youth, as well as practical clinical strategies. Participants will take part in discussions, small group
activities and case reviews.
Who is encouraged to participate?
Human service providers, mental health and addiction providers and workers; counsellors and family members of youth who have
concurrent disorders.
Participants will learn
- about adolescent development as it relates to substance use and mental health issues
- assessment and treatment planning tools for youth with concurrent disorders
- special issues to consider when working with youth, including gender identity, street involvement and diverse backgrounds
and culture
- about accessibility issues for youth with concurrent disorders
- key concepts and treatments for concurrent disorders, including harm reduction, stages of change and motivational interviewing
- common substances used by youth and psychiatric medications used for prevalent disorders
