In memoriam: Hubert H.M. Van Tol, Ph.D.
Dr. Van Tol was a leading Scientist in Molecular Biology & Neurobiology.
CAMH mourns the loss of a brilliant scientist, who died tragically in a bicycle accident on Thursday, April 20th, 2006. He was 46 years old.
Hubert was known for his many contributions in molecular neuroscience and probably best known for his work in the field of
molecular biology of dopamine receptors.
Born in the Netherlands, Hubert trained at the University of Utrecht and received his Ph.D. in 1987. Dr. Van Tol did his postgraduate
studies at the Vollum Institute, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland Oregon from 1987 – 1990. In 1990, Dr. Van Tol
was appointed to the then Clarke Institute of Psychiatry and the University of Toronto. Dr. Van Tol was the Head of the Molecular
Neurobiology and Transgenic Sections at CAMH, a Canadian Research Chair in Neurobiology and a Professor in the Department
of Psychiatry and at the University of Toronto. Van Tol held cross-appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology
as well as the Institute of Medical Science.
Hubert’s numerous achievements during his career were highly regarded and recognized through awards such as the John Dewan
award, The Prix Galien, and the Joey & Toby Tanenbaum Distinguished Scientist Award for Schizophrenia Research. Dr. Van Tol
held patents for his discoveries, and was funded by CIHR, Heart & Stroke Foundation, OMHF, CPRF, NARSAD and NIDA, as well
as industry partners Sandoz (Novataris), Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
The Research Program is planning a Memorial service for Hubert in the summer. It will include members of Hubert’s family.
We will post the information on the service when it becomes available.
As an important member of the Research Program and CAMH itself, we know that Hubert will be greatly missed.
