Research Training

Scientists at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health have supervised research trainees throughout CAMH’s history.  Currently, over 150 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows pursue their studies under the direction of scientists in the four research departments: Clinical Research, Neuroscience Research, the PET Centre, and Social, Prevention, and Health Policy Research.  Our trainees come from a variety of disciplines, and go on to become very influential contributors to the substance use and mental health field

Given the breadth, intensity, and success of our research training, CAMH, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, decided to coordinate, expand and improve training capacity.  To this end, an inaugural Director of Research Training was appointed in December 2005. The current Director of Research Training is Dr. Allan S. Kaplan, MD, FRCP(C).

Dr. Kaplan is working collaboration with CAMH's  Research Executive Committee to enhance and improve the experience of research trainees at CAMH. These initiatives are designed to enhance the trainees’ ability to take advantage of unique CAMH features including:

  • The diversity of our science that is translational and emphasizes research that goes from the bench to the bedside to the community
  • A special expertise in concurrent mental health and substance use disorders
  • Research incorporating many disciplines with a focus on both community and institutional work
  • The demonstrated willingness of CAMH scientists to collaborate across disciplines
  • The proximity of CAMH to the University of Toronto and a matrix of surrounding universities

We believe that the combination of outstanding trainees, world-class supervisors, broad opportunities, and institutional commitment to scholarship and excellence results in extraordinary undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training at CAMH.
