Research

The Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit is involved in a broad range of research activities to advance knowledge in the fields of health services and policy research, population health research and social science research. These types of research provide the information that health care professionals and decision-makers need to promote and implement positive change in our health care system.

Recent examples of research conducted by the Unit include:

  • Understanding the mental health and addictions needs of the homeless, injection drug users, and other marginalized populations;
  • Evaluating community-based health programs and systems for clients with serious and chronic illnesses;
  • Generating and disseminating best practices with regard to concurrent (addiction and mental health) disorders and needle exchange programs;
  • Developing the Ontario Hospital Report Card to monitor performance of mental health services in that sector; and
  • Evaluating the impact of additional funds provided to key areas of Ontario’s community mental health system, with a knowledge exchange component designed to increase stakeholder engagement in research and knowledge transfer.

Other studies take into consideration social factors, financing systems, government policies, delivery of health care services, health technologies as well as the personal beliefs and behaviours that affect health care.
