ARQ2: Counsellor competence
<<Back to Main Index
Go to First Question>>
This section answers some common questions from counsellors:
We already conduct a lengthy assessment at our agency. Why is it necessary to add this extra piece?
Will clients feel uncomfortable being asked about sexual orientation and gender identity at assessment?
What are the barriers to discussing sexual orientation and gender identity?
I am only conducting the assessment and will not be involved in the treatment/counselling. Should I be asking about the client’s sexual orientation and gender identity? Will this only “open up a can of worms” or bring up a lot of unrelated issues I won’t have time to deal with?
Why discuss the issues in Part B?
What can I do if I feel uncomfortable asking about sexual orientation and gender identity?
What can I do to help alleviate clients’ concerns about discussing sexual orientation and gender identity?
I am not LGBTTTIQ. How can I convey to a client that I am LGBTTTIQ-positive?
How can I/we make our practice or agency more LGBTTTIQ-positive?
What are some of the specific needs, concerns and/or experiences of LGBTTTIQ people of colour or other queer people from marginalized communities?
Can the questions in the ARQ2 guide be used with clients who have severe mental health problems?
