ADAT: Who can ADAT be used with?
The ADAT tools are meant to be used with all clients who are:
-
stable
-
considering change (or need help maintaining goals)
-
likely to benefit from scheduled, structured treatment.
The full set of tools does not need to be used with clients who are
-
in the pre-contemplative stage of change
-
in need of stabilization
-
in withdrawal management services, and not intending to proceed to more active treatment
-
do not speak English or French (or use cultural interpreter).
-
Clients in these groups may still benefit from having some of the tools applied.
Also, the tools have not been normed for particular populations such as youth, women, older adults or those living with concurrent
disorders; however, some of the tools are appropriate for youth under the age of 18 who are stable and contemplating change:
-
Drug History Questionnaire
-
Adverse Consequences of Substance Use
-
Behaviour and Symptom Identification Scale
-
Drug Avoidance Self-Efficacy Scale
Youth under 18 who are entering residential treatment require administration of the full set of eight tools. With all clients, it will be important for the administering professional to consider literacy issues. Some clients may require
assistance in reading and completing the tools. This will be particularly important with clients who are not literate in English
or French; the assistance of a cultural interpreter may also be important in this situation.
