ADAT: Other questions about ADAT
Are the ADAT tools mandatory and, if so, what happens if my organization does not use them?
The ADAT tools are mandatory for addictions agencies that have transfer payment agreements with the MoHLTC. CAMH is not responsible
for monitoring the use of the ADAT tools.
Will all treatment centres in Ontario accept my clients if I used ADAT?
Treatment centres that receive funding from the MoHLTC-Addiction Program are expected to accept and refer clients based on
the information collected via the ADAT process, if the process is competently administered. Some agencies who have experienced
a number of problems with ADAT packages which are improperly completed by a particular referral source may refuse to accept
future referrals from that source unless the ADAT packages are properly completed, perhaps by another agency. Treatment centres
not funded by MoHLTC may have their own assessment protocol.
When should I redo the tools with a client?
The assessment is a snapshot in time and might / could / should be retaken periodically. However, you do not usually need
to redo an assessment just because it has been done at another location.
If you are trying to decide whether to reassess, it is probably warranted if, for example:
-
There's merit in re-administering some or all of the tools.
-
The time frame set by the program has expired (usually three or six months)
-
The Basis 32 was administered longer than a week ago.
-
The person who did the initial assessment thinks a reassessment is needed.
-
The client's situation has changed substantially (e.g., new medical or emotional issue, now homeless, etc.)
-
The client has been re-admitted
-
You want to measure the client's progress
-
You are considering discharging the client.
Reassessment decisions are usually driven by internal policies of your organization. Staff should be encouraged to re-administer
tools when appropriate.
I was trained with the face-to-face workshop; do I have to take the online version again?
No. The content of the trainings is the same in both versions of the course.
Now that I have taken the training, does this make me certified to do ADAT?
CAMH distributes letters of completion to participants in the course, not letters of certification. CAMH is not a licensing
or regulatory body, and we cannot offer "certification" for ADAT. However, CAMH is endorsed by the MoHLTC-Addiction Program
to offer training that meets the ministry standards.
I was trained by my manager/co-worker/peer; do I have to take CAMH training?
We highly recommend that all staff who use ADAT participate in CAMH ADAT training. CAMH offers the course at cost and is the
only organization endorsed by the MoHLTC to offer this training.
I don't want the training; I will just read the ADAT manual and learn from that. Is that OK?
Reading the manual will not teach you to competently administer the tools. Experienced people in the field have found it necessary
to attend either the three-day workshop or the nine-week online course to understand and properly administer the tools.
I am not sure if my organization has a service agreement with the MoHLTC-Addiction Program; how do I find out?
Contact the MOHLTC-Addiction Program: http://www.infogo.gov.on.ca/paceweb/owa/intersrv_en.disp_service_unit?IN_UNIT_ID=UNT0023534
How do I know if I am covered by the MoHLTC-Addiction Program "umbrella" licence agreement for BASIS-32?
Check your organization's service agreements with the MoHLTC-Addiction Program, or contact the MOHLTC-Addiction Program: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/addict/addict_mn.html
Can staff who have successfully taken CAMH's ADAT training, but who are not employed by MoHLTC-funded addiction agencies use
ADAT?
People who have received ADAT training by CAMH but are not working in a MoHLTC transfer payment agency can use the CAMH-copyrighted
materials (SOCRATES and BASIS-32 are not included), provided they agree to the User Agreement.
Can CAMH organize a licence agreement for my organization for BASIS-32?
No. Each agency must make its own agreement. Contact: <link to contact info on McLean's hospital>
The BASIS-32 is under copyright of McLean's Hospital, Belmont, MA, USA. There is a fee to use this instrument; contact McLean's
Hospital directly* at: http://www.basissurvey.org/basis32/
I am an EAP worker; what do I need to do to get the tools/manual?
You need to fill out a user's agreement before CAMH can distribute an electronic version to you. We highly recommend that
you take one of our training courses on ADAT before you use the tools.
Online training doesn't work for me; do you offer a face-to-face workshop?
We no longer offer regularly scheduled face-to-face ADAT workshops. However, we do offer face-to-face workshops on request;
the fee is based on cost-recovery for CAMH. Contact: ets@camh.net.
How long does it take to complete all the forms for ADAT?
The amount of time depends on whether you are transferring the information from a paper form to the computer or inputting
it directly into the computer. On average, experienced people can complete the forms within two hours.
Can I just give the client the forms and have him or her fill them out?
Some forms can be filled out by the client for self-assessment. However, a person trained in administering ADAT must complete
the scores.
What is TREAT, and how is it related to ADAT?
TREAT is The Roster of Electronic Assessment Tools. More information can be found at http://www.treat.ca. The set of tools included in the ADAT package is available via TREAT.
What is DART, and how is it related to ADAT?
DART is the Ontario Drug and Alcohol Registry of Treatment. More information can be found at http://www.dart.on.ca/. The DART website lists treatment centres across Ontario and includes other treatment resources.
What is DATIS, and how is it related to ADAT?
DATIS is the Ontario Drug and Alcohol Treatment Information System. It includes all MoHLTC-funded addictions programs in the province.
Part of the data required from these programs to maintain DATIS includes the ADAT package. All such programs have free access
to the computerized tools and scoring through DATIS.
I am not in Ontario; can I use these tools?
All the tools have been normed and validated for a general population. The tools were selected to meet the needs of an Ontario
population. CAMH can grant permission to agencies outside Ontario to use the tools for which it holds copyright. However,
if you are outside Ontario, your own agency/decision-makers may want to review each tool to determine whether it would meet
the needs of your populations.
