ADAT: Characteristics of core assessment tools

The ADAT tools are brief to administer, and they allow flexibility:

  • One or more tools can be administered individually at relevant times throughout the client's treatment to monitor progress and outcome.
  • Using the complete package of core tools at assessment offers multidimensional information on client functioning (as specified by the areas of client strengths and needs).

Psychoactive Drug History Questionnaire  ( DHQ )

Purpose: Obtain detailed history of the client's use of alcohol and other drugs in the past 90 days

Clinical Utility: Level of treatment and treatment/goal planning

Age of Target Population: Adults, adolescents

Norms Available: N/A

Psychometric Properties: Test-retest reliability

Administration Options: Semi-structured interview

Time to Administer: 20-30 minutes

Adverse Consequences of Substance Use  ( AC )

Purpose: Measures the severity and range of adverse consequences

Clinical Utility: Level of tratment and treatment/goal planning

Age of Target Population: Adults, Adolescents

Norms Available: No

Psychometric Properties: None

Administration Options: Interview

Time to Administer: 10 minutes

SOCRATES  ( Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale )

Purpose: Measures readiness for change

Clinical Utility: Level of treatment and treatment/goal planning

Age of Target Population: Adults

Norms Available: Yes

Psychometric Properties: Test/retest; Reliability

Administration Options: Paper-pencil; Can be self-administrated

Time to Administer: 10 minutes

Drug-Taking Confidence Questionnaire  ( DTCQ-8 ; Alcohol & Drugs)

Purpose: Provides a profile of the client's perceived ability to resist using drugs/drinking heavily in a variety of situations.

Clinical Utility Monitor a client's progress in treatment relapse potential

Age of Target Population: Adults

Norms Available: Yes (age/sex)

Psychometric Properties: Reliability (2,3); validity

Administration Options: Paper-pencil/computer; Can be self-administrated

Time to Administer: 3 minutes

Treatment Entry Questionnaire  ( TEQ )

Purpose: Measures motivation level

Clinical Utility: Levels of autonomous external and introjected motivation

Age of Target Population: Adults

Administration Options: Paper-pencil; Can be self-administrated

BASIS-32  ( Behaviour And Symptom Identification Scale )

Purpose: Measures level of difficulty in various areas of life functioning within the past week

Clinical Utility: Mental health status

Age of Target Population: Adults; Adolescents

Norms Available: Yes

Psychometric Properties: Reliability (4,5); Validity

Administration Options: Paper-pencil; Can be self-administered; Structured interview

Time to Administer: 10 minutes

Perceived Social Support  ( PSS )

Purpose: Assess quality of relationships with friends and family

Clinical Utility: Assists in the assessment of a client's potential recovery environment

Age of Target Population: Adults
