We need to talk openly about mental health and addiction: Breakthrough Winter 2004

...now we can!

Access to timely and relevant information and support is important for people and their families who are taking their first steps in seeking help and/or information. The R. Samuel McLaughlin Addiction and Mental Health Information Centre, a new initiative from CAMH was launched this fall. Its goal is to increase CAMH's ability to reach and support Ontarians in need of assistance, enable people to play an informed and active role in their own health care, prevent conditions from becoming serious, and seek the best care possible. The development of the McLaughlin Centre has been guided by an Advisory Committee and by consultations with internal and external stakeholders, research into best practices in information and referral, and an environmental scan of internal and external services.

Early intervention is essential in reducing the impact of an addiction or mental health problem. The need for knowledge regarding early detection and treatment is urgent. A recent Health Canada study estimated that the known cost to Canada of mental illness alone is $14.4 billion annually, making it one of the most costly conditions in the country. If we can help people to necessary help earlier, these costs can be reduced.
This new resource centre is particularly committed to reaching out to those who are not currently connected to support, and to supporting the many people who find it difficult to access the addiction and mental health systems, in particular, those from diverse communities.

The R. Samuel McLaughlin Addiction and Mental Health Information Centre will serve Ontario through:

  • An enhanced toll-free Information Line, including information and referral specialists and audio-taped messages;
  • A telephone support line staffed by volunteers providing informal and/or peer support;
  • Web-based information on a range of topics;
  • A store front Information Centre at 219 Dufferin St. in Toronto (at Dufferin and King Streets), offering a range of print materials for the general public;
  • Capacity to provide service to those who speak languages other than English or French through partnership with CAMH's Cultural Interpretation Services;
  • New print, audio-taped messages, and on-line materials in 16 languages;
  • Increased quality improvement measures, including ongoing caller surveys and certification of staff; and
  • Newly created employment positions well suited to clients.

Brochures and posters about the centre are currently being disseminated broadly throughout Ontario. Additionally, presentations to community agencies are available.

CAMH and the R. Samuel McLaughlin Addiction and Mental Health Information Centre will make an important contribution to the addiction and mental health systems by encouraging early detection, help seeking, and increasing public understanding. It will be an important resource for families, clients and service providers, and we welcome inquiries about this service.
