Protecting your health information: New privacy act to come in fall

At the Centre

You may have heard recently, either in the news, or even from your doctor, that there will be some changes to how Ontario's health sector can collect, use, keep, make known and destroy the personal health information of its patients.

These changes come in the form of an Act called the Personal Health Information Protection Act or PHIPA. This Act will govern the collection of personal health information by hospitals and healthcare providers across the province of Ontario including CAMH. These changes are scheduled to come into effect on November 1, 2004.

CAMH has created a Privacy Task Force with representation from many groups across the organization to identify issues and to create a strategy to fulfill the responsibilities that will come alongside PHIPA.

More information on PHIPA and the steps CAMH is taking will be in the next issue of Breakthrough. Stay tuned!
