Mutual aid in the 21st century

CrossCurrents

If Alcoholics Anonymous is not a good fit for a client, here are some alternatives.

  • Secular Organizations for Sobriety
    www.secularsobriety.org
Departing from traditional 12-step models, this program advocates sobriety, autonomy and free thinking.

  • Women for Sobriety
    www.womenforsobriety.org
Recognizing that women with alcohol problems require a different kind of program than men, WFS created a 13-statement program of positivity that encourages emotional and spiritual growth.

  • Rational Recovery
    www.rational.org
This alternative to the disease model associated with AA believes alcohol use to be a voluntary behaviour. RR is a for-profit organization whose approach is based on self-recovery (there are no groups) and a cognitive-behavioural model.

  • Moderation Management
    www.moderation.org
Rather than focusing on an abstinence goal, MM promotes moderate alcohol consumption and the prevention of potentially detrimental outcomes.
