The effects of stigma may be even more painful and harmful for families than dealing with the fact that a loved one has substance use and mental health problems. When families work together, the person with the co-occurring disorder is more likely to have a successful and lasting recovery.

The effects of stigma may discourage them from seeking care and support for themselves and their loved one. The brochure also provides information for families on sources of information about this issue.
