When prescribing methadone in the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence, it is important to have guidelines to follow. In Canada, each province regulates methadone maintenance treatment and, therefore, treatment guidelines may vary between provinces.

Methadone Maintenance Guidelines reflects the general standard of methadone prescribing practice in Ontario today. These guidelines replace the old Methadone Treatment Guidelines published in Ontario in August 1996.
