September 10, 2011 is World Suicide Prevention Day
Suicide is literally a matter of life and death, and yet it remains a taboo subject that is rarely talked about. Suicide Prevention
Day was created by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) to raise awareness, encourage discussion and ultimately help prevent deaths from suicide, which are estimated at 4,000
deaths in Canada and one million worldwide each year .
IASP has partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) on this year’s campaign, Preventing Suicide in Multicultural Communities. While it is important to be culturally sensitive and aware of potential cultural differences, IASP and the WHO remind us
that we must not let “culture” overshadow other important factors contributing to suicide.
