CAMH to kick off next phase of unique redevelopment

For Immediate release – June 8, 2009 (Toronto) – Tomorrow, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George Smitherman, will be joining CAMH President and CEO Dr. Paul Garfinkel to officially kick-off the next phase of CAMH’s Queen Street redevelopment project.

Phase 1B of the redevelopment project will deliver three new buildings and continue the transformation of CAMH’s historical site from an institutional campus into a mixed-use urban village centred on client care.

The highlight of CAMH’s next phase will be the Intergenerational Wellness Centre, which will include 12 new beds for youth aged from 14 to 18 who are dealing with both mental health and addictions issues, a vulnerable and high-needs group. These beds are the first in their kind in Toronto and reflect CAMH’s commitment to extending high-quality care towards under serviced groups. Also housed in the new building will be the Geriatric Mental Health Program, which combines 48 in-patient beds with a suite of outpatient programming and supports.

Joining CAMH clients, staff and guests to usher in the next phase will be John Hunkin, CAMH Foundation Chair; Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George Smitherman; and CAMH President and CEO Dr. Paul Garfinkel.

Sean Winger and Nicholas Osborne (representing youth and seniors respectively),  will share their inspiring stories of recovery.
