Kirby Committee releases three reports relating to mental health, mental illness and addiction

For immediate Release (November 23, 2004 - Toronto) - The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) applauds the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (Kirby Committee) for their work in putting a national spotlight on mental health, mental illness and addiction through the three reports released today.

Mental illness and addiction have long been the orphans of the health care system. This first national report on mental illness and addiction is an encouraging sign that these health issues are starting to get the attention they deserve.

It's clear that these reports reflect a consultative process that has been inclusive of patients, families as well as health care providers. CAMH is pleased that the report includes a recognition of the impact of mental illness and addiction, the need for reform and action, and the importance of supports that fall outside the traditional health system - housing, social support, income and employment.
