CAMH Welcomes FIPPA, releases documents through proactive disclosure

With the application of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to Ontario hospitals as of Jan. 1, 2012, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is welcoming the increased public accountability the legislation brings.

As part of its ongoing commitment to transparency, along with other hospitals CAMH is proactively disclosing a number of documents that are subject to FIPPA on Jan. 3, 2012, the first business day that FIPPA is in force. The documents being disclosed are considered to be of public interest, including board minutes and hospital executives’ employment contracts. All are available on the CAMH proactive disclosure webpage. Additional documents will continue to be released proactively in the future.

In preparation for FIPPA, CAMH has established a Freedom of Information and Privacy Office. Any individual interested in making an access request for documents held by CAMH is encouraged to first check the CAMH website to see whether the information is already available before filing an access request. Information on how to file an access request is available on the CAMH FIPPA webpage or by phoning the Freedom of Information and Privacy Office at 416-595-6133.

FIPPA is just the latest in Ontario hospitals’ history of commitment to public accountability, transparency, and continuous performance improvement. CAMH, for example, partnered with other specialty psychiatric hospitals to develop common indicators to publicly report on quality and safety improvements.
