New publication: What Parents Need to Know about Teen Risk Taking

Strategies for reducing problems related to alcohol, other drugs, gambling and Internet use

Produced by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

What Parents Need to Know about Teen Risk Taking: Strategies for reducing problems related to alcohol, other drugs, gambling and Internet use is the latest addition to CAMH's print resources. It is the second book in the What Parents Need to Know about Teens series.

In the book, CAMH authors David A. Wolfe, Debbie Chiodo, Bruce Ballon, Gloria Chaim and Joanna L. Henderson address some of the risky behaviours teens may become involved in such as smoking, drinking, using other drugs, gambling and inappropriate use of the Internet. After reading the book, parents will have a better understanding of:

  • what "experimenting" means during adolescence
  • the types of pressures teens may experience and how these pressures
  • influence their behaviour and decisions
  • how to provide teens with knowledge and guidance that they will respect
  • ways to emphasize safety and responsibility and remain relevant to teens' lives
  • strategies for effective parenting that communicate positive messages and reduce conflict.
