Baking bonds: Volunteers create treats with clients and staff

In a frenzy of culinary fun, nine volunteers from TD Bank Financial Group joined the clients and staff of CAMH’s Geriatric Mental Health Program for a baking social in February.

The volunteers worked with staff and clients to cook up an assortment of cookies, muffins, brownies and fudge, creating an enjoyable and frenetic assembly line to place all the ingredients on baking sheets before putting everything in the oven.

“I am thrilled with the level of investment in the corporate volunteer program from the Geriatric Mental Health program,” says Jim Davey, Corporate Volunteer Coordinator, who made a special note of thanks to Rong Ting, Manager, Geriatric Mental Health Program and Joanne Uyede, Administrative Assistant for being instrumental in the organization of this event.

Along with the goodies, many strong relationships were created between the volunteers, clients and staff. The volunteers interacted easily with the clients, and included them in all aspects of the activities.

“I was impressed with the clients and employees at CAMH, and how well they get along with each other,” said one TD Bank volunteer. “I admire the staff for their dedication, their patience and the great care they provide.”

“The participation in the event of all levels of the unit staff was incredible,” Jim says. “They made the volunteers feel welcome and comfortable. The clients made the afternoon an especially great success by embracing the corporate volunteers into their lives.”

After hearing a comprehensive overview of the program from Physician-in-Chief Dr. Benoit Mulsant, the volunteers learned more about the care provided by the program from Gaby Golea, Administrative Director, and Rong Ting.

“The orientation provided a great overview of the program, the challenges, and the faces supporting the program,” said another TD Bank volunteer. “More importantly, the orientation provided much needed perspective and background.”
