A sunny day ushers in Paul E. Garfinkel Park

With clients, staff, family and friends at his side, CAMH’s President and CEO pulled aside the velvet blanket to inaugurate Paul E. Garfinkel Park, the City of Toronto’s newest public park and a tribute to his 30 years of public service.

“I am deeply honoured. My time at CAMH has been the most fulfilling of my life,” Dr. Garfinkel told the dozens assembled for the event. “I feel very proud that we’re providing the best in care and helping to eliminate stigma.”

“This event bears significance to me in three ways,” Dr. Garfinkel continued. “I love Toronto. I love parks and it is a pleasure to be standing side-by-side with one of my favourite people – [Toronto Deputy Mayor and Councilor] Joe Pantalone, whose early and continued support of our vision helped to create the urban village CAMH will become.”

Deputy Mayor Pantalone, who officiated the ceremony, is an avid supporter of green spaces. He commented on the perfect fit of Toronto’s newest park named for a man who supports holistic healthcare and the growth of an organization that serves those who are marginalized an in need of care.

“Dr. Garfinkel has been an advocate for mental and addiction for 30 years. He is the driving force for integration and leadership at CAMH,” said the Deputy Mayor. “This … park plays an important role in furthering Dr. Garfinkel’s vision of transforming an outmoded hospital campus into an urban village and supports Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation’s commitment to the city’s green, public spaces.”

Daniel Burns, Chair of the CAMH Board of Trustees, presented Dr. Garfinkel with the plaque that conveys the scope of Dr Garfinkel’s contributions and the story of his legacy -- “Dr. Garfinkel changed how things were done by introducing the notion that our institution should not be isolated from Toronto but be a part of it.”
