Leading journalist to moderate panel on impact of CAMH research
Ever wonder how CAMH’s research affects people’s lives? One of Canada’s leading science broadcasters and journalists will
help answer that question at a special event at CAMH’s Annual General Meeting on June 18, 2009, at 4:45 pm.
Jay Ingram, host of Discovery Channel Canada’s flagship Daily Planet science show, will moderate a lively, interactive discussion
with three prominent CAMH scientists working in very diverse areas of research – Dr. James Kennedy, Director, Neuroscience
Research; Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, Head, Neurochemical Imaging in Mood Disorders at the PET Centre; and Dr. Paula Goering, Section
Head - Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit. Dr Bruce Pollock, Vice President, CAMH Research, will introduce the moderator
and speakers and provide an overview.
Jay Ingram has hosted Daily Planet since it began in 1995 and previously hosted CBC Radio’s national science show, Quirks
and Quarks, from 1979 to 1992. At the time it was the only hour-long, prime-time daily science show in the world.
He’s the perfect host for an event intended to connect a ‘lay audience’ with the meaning and impact of world-class mental
health and addiction research, according to Dr. Pollock.
“One of CAMH’s priorities this year is to broaden the understanding of the general public-- and our stakeholders in particular--
of the research we do at CAMH and its impact,” Dr. Pollock says, adding that ‘impact’ is also the theme of the forthcoming
CAMH Research annual report.
Author of 10 books and producer of numerous newspaper, magazine and broadcast science pieces, Mr. Ingram received the Sandford
Fleming medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for his efforts to popularize science, the Royal Society’s McNeil medal for
the Public Awareness of Science and the Michael Smith award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
