They came to eat, they came to socialize, they came to dance, they came to celebrate International Women’s Day 2011.

For the 13th year, hundreds of women gathered at John Innes Community Centre at the annual event hosted by CAMH, A.I.S. (Accommodation
Information and Support Inc.), and other community partners and support agencies.
The day offers women a chance to celebrate their strengths, talents and accomplishments in a fun and safe environment.
An army of volunteers arrived early to set up tables and chairs and to decorate the space.

A ‘portrait’ studio with on-the-spot photo printing available so that women could get their pictures taken and have prints
to take with them.

| Women created hand-painted murals to commemorate the day. |
Artist Lindsay A. Veh volunteered to organize the arts table so that together women could create a mural commemorating the
day. Lindsay was also inspired by the entertainment to capture scenes of bellydancing and drumming.

The IWD organizing committee would like to highlight the tremendous contribution Lisa Shamai has make to this event for the
past 12 years. Every year Lisa and her staff make sure the women have a luncheon that is in keeping with the theme of celebrating
the rich lives of all the participants.
Lisa is not only the owner of a successful catering business, but also a wonderful community partner providing such valuable
services as:
- teaching healthy & budget conscious cooking classes for single mothers on OW-in various community centres, through Toronto
East Social Services.
- teaching healthy cooking classes to cancer patients at Wellspring
- teach children basic cooking at a local daycare
- being an active member of the “Riverdale food working group”, offering kitchen & skills in canning to turn local food into
home canned products, to be sold at the Withrow Farmers Market & raise funds for this food equity & sustainability focused
group.
- Hiring numerous staff from John Howard Society, Elizabeth Fry Society, Woodgreen Youth Employment, Jobs Ontario, and other
government initiatives.
The day would not be possible without the following businesses donating products and time to make the women feel cared for.
