Celebrating Women from Across Toronto on International Women’s Day

They came to eat, they came to socialize, they came to dance, they came to celebrate International Women’s Day 2011.

IWD Dancers
IWD Drumming Hands
Belly dancers are always a crowd pleaser! Drumming circle.

For the 13th year, hundreds of women gathered at John Innes Community Centre at the annual event hosted by CAMH, A.I.S. (Accommodation Information and Support Inc.), and other community partners and support agencies.

The day offers women a chance to celebrate their strengths, talents and accomplishments in a fun and safe environment.

An army of volunteers arrived early to set up tables and chairs and to decorate the space.

IWD Overview
Volunteers decorated the space.

A ‘portrait’ studio with on-the-spot photo printing available so that women could get their pictures taken and have prints to take with them.

IWD Hand Painting
Women created hand-painted murals to commemorate the day.

Artist Lindsay A. Veh volunteered to organize the arts table so that together women could create a mural commemorating the day. Lindsay was also inspired by the entertainment to capture scenes of bellydancing and drumming.

Volunteers mobilized in precision formation to serve the delicious meals made by Lisa Shamai Cuisinere.

IWD Kitchen Vols
Volunteer servers get ready to
deliver the meals.

The IWD organizing committee would like to highlight the tremendous contribution Lisa Shamai has make to this event for the past 12 years. Every year Lisa and her staff make sure the women have a luncheon that is in keeping with the theme of celebrating the rich lives of all the participants.
