Voices from the Wall: An exhibition of photographs by Tom LackeyOctober 25, 2007 - October, 28, 200712 noon to 5 pm
In 1860, patients of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, as it was then known, began construction of the brick wall that would
separate and conceal their lives from the surrounding world for more than one hundred years. Today the surviving segments
of that wall are both a monument and an emotionally charged manuscript.
Recorded on its bricks with incised vigor are dates, names, words and symbols with meaning for generations of patients. Today,
the wall is being restored as part of CAMH’s transformation into a hospital for the 21st Century. Tom Lackey has captured
these Voices from the Wall in a hauntingly beautiful series of photographs.
