Benzodiazepines: What do benzodiazepines do?

Benzodiazepines enhance the activity of the neuro-transmitter GABA—a chemical in the brain that helps you to feel calm. Their effect also produces drowsiness, making it easier to fall asleep and to sleep through the night.
