Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
The IGS is designed to help therapists identify situations in which clients with gambling problems are at risk for relapse.
Based on the widely-used Inventory of Drinking Situations (IDS), the IGS provides an individualized profile of a client's
gambling behaviour by identifying situations associated with the client's gambling in the past year. The client and therapist
can focus their relapse prevention efforts more effectively once these high-risk situations, feelings and cognitions are identified.
Onscreen Administration, Scoring and Report Generation
Clients complete a 63-item inventory and the items are scored and summarized into 10 subscales:
Negative affect situations
-
Negative Emotions
-
Conflict with Others
Temptation situations
-
Urges and temptations
-
Testing Personal Control
Positive affect situations
-
Pleasant Emotions
-
Social Pressure to Use
-
Need for Excitement
Gambling cycle situations
-
Worried about Debts
-
Winning and Chasing
-
Confidence in Skill
The report provides a summary of the scores for each subscale and a list of the highest risk areas, with examples of high
scoring items, and suggestions for the client.
