Getting Help

Current Research at the PRIME Clinic

The PRIME (Prevention through Risk Identification, Management, and Education) Clinic is one of the leading clinics in North America in studying possible ways to prevent or delay the onset of psychosis. The idea of prevention and reducing risk, although not new in medicine, is only gaining momentum in mental health practice.

Research at PRIME has several goals:

  1. To accurately identify young people at high risk of psychosis
  2. To investigate putative risk markers and causal factors that may underlie the development of psychosis (i.e. biological factors, drug use, stress etc)
  3. To develop appropriate and effective treatments aimed at either reducing the rate of conversion to psychotic illness or delaying its onset
  4. To develop appropriate and effective treatments aimed at relieving presenting symptoms and concerns

Research plays a major role in the work at PRIME however we ensure that the clinical care provided to clients even when it is part of the research is not compromised in any way. All people that are appropriate for PRIME are given information about our current research studies and the opportunity to participate. If they do not wish to be involved in any of the research studies, they are still able to access clinical services offered by the clinic. Individuals can withdraw from research at any stage and this will not compromise their ability to access clinical services offered at PRIME or elsewhere that may be more appropriate. All research involvement is voluntary, anonymous and monitored by CAMH Ethics Committee.
