Income Supports: Ontario Disability Support Program

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) provides income support to individuals who are in financial need and have a physical or mental disability.

You may apply for ODSP if

  • you are a resident of Ontario,
  • your assets do not exceed $5,000, and
  • you have a disability (substantial physical or mental impairment that is continuous or recurrent) and it is expected to last one year or more.

You may also be eligible for ODSP if

  • you are 65 years or older and are not eligible for Old Age Security (OAS), or
  • you are receiving income from the Canada Pension Plan Disability, or
  • you are residing in a psychiatric facility.

In determining if you have a disability, you and other health professionals complete a medical package that includes a Health Status Report and an Activities of Daily Living Report. These forms are submitted to the Disability Adjudication Unit to determine your eligibility for ODSP benefits.

The amount of money you receive from ODSP will vary depending upon your rent and family size. The maximum amount per month that a single person can receive from ODSP is $959.  You may also be entitled to drug and dental coverage, eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures, community and employment start-up benefits, transportation allowances, special diet benefits, special needs items, etc.

For more detailed information, please look at the ODSP website.
