Types of Housing: Emergency Shelters
Emergency shelters (also called hostels) are the best option for people who need housing immediately. Most shelters are free.
Some shelters house specific groups of people, such as women, men, youth or families. Shelters can also range in size from
housing 5 to more than 100 people. They can also differ in the length of time that someone can stay. It is always best to
call ahead to check bed availability and to ensure that the shelter can meet your needs.
If you need housing immediately, please call the Street Help Line at 1 866-392-3777. For a more complete listing of Emergency
Shelters available in Toronto, please see the Housing Guide produced by the Community Support and Research Unit in collaboration with Education and Publishing.
