Tenant Rights: Paying Rent

Rent must be paid in full on a date and by a method that you and your landlord have agreed upon before you moved into your home.  Your landlord must supply a receipt for rent payment if you ask for one.  You should never hold back any part of the rent, as you may face eviction for doing so.

Your landlord can increase your rent after you have lived in your home for one year.  He/she must give you 90 days notice in writing if they are going to increase your rent.  Your rent can only be increased up to the amount that the government allows.  For the years 2003 and 2004, landlords are allowed to increase rents by 2.9%.
