Getting Help

Step Four: Complete the Application

Many landlords and housing agencies require people to fill in an application if they are interested in living in a particular room/apartment/house. Take some time to fill in these applications carefully and always try to be honest when answering the questions - it may be best for you in the long run. If you are uncertain about filling in the application or are unsure about certain questions, it may be a good idea to ask a support worker or someone you trust to help you fill it in. Make sure that you have the right address or fax number to send back the application.

What do I do if I don't have a current address or contact number?
This can pose a problem, especially if the landlord or housing provider wants to contact you to offer you the place! If you have been staying with a friend or family member, ask them if you can use their address and phone number. If you've been staying at a shelter or hostel, use the address and phone number of that residence. If your main concern is not having a telephone number, it may be a good idea to get a voicemail system. Voicemail systems are sometimes available at community agencies. For example, Queen West Community Health Centre has them at a cost of $10 for 3 months. If you are interested, call 416-760-6000.

What do I do if I don't have housing references?
If you are staying with a friend, ask him or her to provide a housing reference for you. You could also ask a support worker or someone you trust to be a character reference. Even though this person has not been your landlord or housing provider, they can still provide information on your ability to pay rent and live in the type of residence for which you are applying.
