Strengthening Families

Local Project for Program Consultant - Bonnie Polych, Niagara, CAMH

Strengthening Families for the Future (SFF) is a prevention program for families with children between the ages of seven and eleven who may be at risk for substance use problems, depression, violence, delinquency and school failure.  Strengthening Families for the Future is presented in 14 consecutive weeks and there are one-hour concurrent sessions for both the children and parents.  The families learn how to solve problems together, how to communicate better and how to help children develop resiliency.  The program is unique in that it involves the entire family and includes a family meal.

The Local Project:

A facilitator’s orientation workshop to Strengthening Families was held in Niagara in January, 2009 and a SFF program was run at an elementary school in the spring of 2009. Planning is underway for a program to run in 2010.

The Niagara Region’s Strengthening Families Coalition includes Family and Children’s Services, Niagara Child and Youth Services, Niagara District School Board, the Niagara Catholic School Board and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
